Dashashwamedh is the ceremonial ghat — the seven priests, the lamps, the river that is wider here than anywhere else in the old town. The painting is set just before the first aarti, when the steps are wet from the night’s wash and the boats are still tied.

The colour at this hour is closer to warm brass than to gold. The brass platforms used for the evening aarti are still folded against the upper terrace; a single attendant moves between them as if the day has not yet been agreed to. The artist returns to this hour because it is the one moment Dashashwamedh is most itself — neither performing for the visitor nor sleeping.

The composition is oil on linen, palette knife, in the 4:3 landscape format the ghats ask for. The impasto builds the warm flame of the small terrace lamps against a cooler river ground; the texture of the upper wall reads almost as topography. Available across seven sizes, on stretched bars or in a hand-finished floater frame.
