Char Dham & the Mountains

Stone, snow, and the temples between them.

Char Dham & the Mountains cover — Stone, snow, and the temples between them.

Yamunotri in the morning, Gangotri by midday, Kedarnath by evening, Badrinath the next dawn — the route is old and the order is fixed. The four temples sit at altitude in the Garhwal Himalaya; the path between them has been walked, in one form or another, for centuries.

Compositions across this collection extend beyond the four to include the wider sacred geography: Vaishno Devi inside her hill, Amarnath inside his cave, the Golden Temple on its still water, Meenakshi at Madurai with her thousand pillars, Brihadeeswara at Thanjavur with its single granite tower. Each painting is a portrait of one threshold at one moment.

These are not pilgrimage records. They are the temples held at the hour the pilgrim arrives.
