Chapter III — The studio

The wait is the proof.

Every painting is begun after order. Cotton canvas is stretched on kiln-dried pine bars; the surface is primed; the sketch is drawn and sent to the collector for approval; only then does the first stroke of paint go on. Three to four weeks for sizes up to 60 inches; six to eight for the largest pieces.

The country between Mathura and Vrindavan.

Govardhan in the late afternoon, when the parikrama path is still warm and the cattle are walking back. Barsana on the day of Lathmar Holi, when the colour stays in the air for hours. Vrindavan at the hour Banke Bihari opens his curtains, brief as a glimpse.
